Lately, when I do want to muffle up my snare a bit, I use a beanie. It'll stretch with the drum, so tuning/cracking is no problem. It sounds weird, but you put it on the UNDER side of the head. A visually-striking way you could muffle up a drum with a clear head on it is using a bunch of India ink. Try a ton of different things with your current drums, my friend! Use all different types of tape and cloth. Maybe they aren't muffled AS much, or maybe they are just muffled with different stuff/not as much stuff. Seems as some of the funkiest grooves have tastefully muffled drums, especially the toms! I've noticed, that the bass drum and the snare are usually treated a bit different. Starks is the man!
